Hawser Life Monitoring Software

The need to predict a mooring hawser residual strength is crucially important:

  • to prevent oil spillage by tanker breakout
  • to save costs by using hawsers to their full safe life
  • to use appropriate sized hawsers for the prevailing environment

NOW AN OIL TERMINAL OPERATOR CAN MAINTAIN AN ACCURATE RECORD OF THE CURRENT STATE OF ALL HIS HAWSERS.

The software will display a record of the strain life of the hawser on a single bar graph display, to allow crucial interpretation of the state of the hawser.

The updated breaking strain of the hawser (in tonnes) is automatically calculated using OCIMF guidelines.

Where the hawser strains exceed the OCIMF recommendations, this is reported on the screen.

The displays allow the operator to determine the new safety levels and alarm limits for his load monitoring systems.

Numerous hawser configurations can be handled, and details on individual hawsers can be saved and recalled later.

The software is supplied as part of an Buoy Monitoring System.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

There are five distinct areas:

1. Hawser Selection and Configuration.

This allows a new hawser to be named or an extra hawser to be recalled from memory. Data for each hawser held includes: Name, description

Length

New Dry Breaking Strain (NDBS)

Safety and Friction Factors

2. Hawser Loading Data.

Data consists of peaks and troughs of measured load. Magnitude and number of Load pulls (or 'reversals') are determined live, using an algorithm know as 'Rain Flow analysis'.

3. Data Processing

The system uses the guidelines of the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) hawser test report, to create an updated residual strength for the hawser based on entered data.

4. Data Display.

This consists of a histogram of the number of load cycles as a percentage of the NDBS. Together with the updated dry breaking strain figure.

5. Data Reporting.

A report can be printed, including full details of the state of a hawser:
