ELF NíKOSSA FIELD TANKER BERTHING AID

THE TWO LARGE FSOS ON THE NíKOSSA FIELD, WEST AFRICA, LOAD CRUDE OIL AND LIQUIFIED PETROLEUM GAS THROUGH SHUTTLE TANKERS MOORED TO EACH FSO.

IN ORDER TO PROTECT THESE FLOATING UNITS FROM DAMAGE BY COLLISION, AND TO SPEED UP THE MOORING OPERATION, ELF HAVE INVESTED IN TWO DIFFERENTIAL GPS MOORING AIDS FROM .

N'Kossa 1 Floating Storage Vessel and Moored Tanker

THESE ALLOW PILOTS TO TRACK THE SPEED, DISTANCE AND BEARING OF INCOMING TANKERS TOWARDS THE FSO. THE SYSTEM USES DIFFERENTIAL GPS (GLOBAL POSITIONING SATELLITES) TO VERY ACCURATELY MEASURE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE TANKER AND FSO, BEARING IN MIND THAT THE FSOíS POSITION ALSO CHANGES WITH WIND AND TIDE.

RELATIVE POSITION DISPLAYS ARE AVAILABLE AT BOTH THE FSO AND THE TANKER, USING LAPTOP COMPUTERS LINKED TO THE GPS SYSTEM. THE SYSTEM IS SMALL ENOUGH FOR THE PILOT TO CARRY THE SYSTEM WITH HIM ONTO THE TANKER

N'Kossa 2, an LPG Storage Vessel, with Moored Tanker

NíKOSSA I FSO IS A STANDARD TANDEM MOORING, WITH THE TANKER MOORED TO THE STERN OF THE FSO. IN THIS CASE, THE DGPS SYSTEM ALSO DISPLAYS HAWSER LOAD, WHEN THE VESSEL IS MOORED.

FOR NíKOSSA II, AN LPG GAS STORAGE VESSEL, THE TANKER IS MOORED SIDE BY SIDE WITH THE FSO, AND REPRESENTS AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, AND POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS BERTHING PROBLEM. DGPS GIVES POSITIONAL ACCURACIES BETTER THAN HALF A METRE TO ASSIST THIS.
